Technical Translation Tips 01
Use an in-house technical reviewer when possible
Go to: Tip 01 Tip 02 Tip 03
Once a technical translation has been completed, we urge our clients to conduct a review of the technical translation to ensure that the company-specific preferences regarding terminology are used throughout the document. This enables us to tailor each technical translation to meet the specific needs of each client with precision. Following are some points that will ensure that the client review is conducted effectively:
- Someone within the company who is a native speaker of the target language should conduct the review. If possible, that person should have lived in the target culture recently and be familiar with current usage.
- A team of linguists crafts each technical translation. In all likelihood, the reviewer in your company is not an experienced linguist. They may have different ideas about how the technical translation should be written. We urge you to ask them not to re-translate the material, merely to review it for overall consistency with company and industry-specific preferences.
- Some people simply can’t resist the opportunity to "re-write" a technical translation — just as some people can’t resist "editing" English language material that they review. In some cases, their contribution can improve the work; in others, it may weaken it because technical translation and writing require specific skills.Â
- If the reviewer is from another division or department, or has another opinion about what the content of the material should convey, they may want to re-write the technical translation. It is ABC’s responsibility to translate the original text as accurately and clearly as possible.Â
ABC will go over all of your reviewer’s recommendations thoroughly. When appropriate, we will work with you directly to determine the revisions that best meet your needs. All revisions will be implemented at no additional charge. If desktop publishing services are being provided, revisions to text technical translation should be completed prior to the initiation of DTP work.
If our services only involve technical translation (i.e. no desktop publishing or software/web localization), this is nearly the end of our work. When these other services are required, we ask for client sign-off on all text technical translations before we begin either desktop publishing or localization work. This helps maintain a focus on the quality of our technical translation services, as well as allowing for more efficient delivery of these other services by our project team. Incorporation of client comments and suggestions based on this review is included in our pricing – there is no additional cost for this service.
