1.) What should you look for when choosing a web translation service?

At ABC we believe you should be looking for an experienced, full-service language conversion company, and it appears from your e-mail message that you are taking the breadth of the vendor's services into consideration. We agree with the thought that while you may be starting the translation process with the web site, fully exploiting the power of translation to market and expand your business will require communication in a variety of media over time.

Regarding the web site specifically, the company you choose must have access to professional translators with the right combination of a) linguistic and subject matter expertise to produce translations accurate in meaning and spirit, as well as b) technical skills to provide ready-to-post files to the web master.

The vendor must provide technical support including computer graphics expertise to embed foreign-language text in buttons, photos, and other graphics, and to test the files fully. In addition, creating a software-based memory of all the text for the purpose of tracking repeated phrases ensures the consistency of language; decreases turnaround times for updates and other revisions; and increases your savings as repeats accumulate.

ABC is currently in the process of completing our ISO 900X certification requirements; rest assured that our work processes are carefully monitored for quality assurance purposes. We try to minimize the number of translators per language who work with each client over time in order to cultivate a good understanding of the business and maintain consistent terminology. All translation and graphics work is carefully proofed, and our clients are always encouraged to review and approve any job before we create final files for submission. 

Note: We are not familiar with the competition's work, but their Web sites lead us to believe that translation may not be their exclusive focus: one has several locations (different agencies?) to manage and coordinate, the other what appears to be an emphasis on teaching languages.

3.) How can ABC save you money?

As mentioned above, we regularly use translation memory-tool software that helps ensure consistency and accuracy within a single document regardless of length, and cumulatively across all documents for the same client. Two of the tools we use are the Translators Workbench (TRADOS) and Deja Vu. The software recognizes repeated words, phrases, and sentences, and queries the translator as to whether a previously used translation should be applied again or modified. Besides ensuring consistency, the software enables considerable cost and time savings for repeat material, which is passed on to the client, because the per-word cost for repeats is less than for unique occurrences. The precise savings can be determined only after we receive the actual documents to be translated.
